What Is an Aircon Gas Top-Up Service
There are 3 common types of aircon gas, R22, R32, and R410a. If your air conditioner uses R22 gas, it will need to be replaced with a new one that uses R410a. This is because the production of R22 has been phased out due to its harmful effects on the environment. Most newer air conditioners are using R32 or R410a as they are more environmentally friendly.
R22 Gas
R22 gas is commonly used in air conditioners and refrigerators. It is a hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC), which means that it contains chlorine, fluorine, and carbon. Although R22 gas is not as harmful to the ozone layer as another type of HCFC known as R12, the EPA has mandated a phase-out of R22 gas as a result of the Clean Air Act of 2010.
By 2020, R22 gas will be completely phased out. The primary reason for the phase-out is to reduce the amount of chlorine in the atmosphere. The phase-out of R22 gas is expected to reduce the amount of chlorine in the atmosphere by 70%.

R410A Gas
R22 is now being phased out due to its harmful effects on the environment. As a result, R410A gas has become the new gold standard for air conditioners. Unlike R22, R410A contains no chlorine, making it much safer for the environment.
In addition, AC units that use R410A gas are more effective and reliable, providing improved air quality and comfort for users. With the phase-out of R22 gas well underway, it’s only a matter of time before all air conditioners are using R410A.
R32 Gas
R32 is a hydrofluorocarbon (HFC), which means it contains fluorine, hydrogen, and carbon. Unlike R22, R32 does not contain chlorine. As a result, it is much more environmentally friendly than R22 gas. In addition, AC units that use R32 gas are more effective and efficient than those using R22 gas.
R32 is the most common type of gas used in new air conditioners, and it is expected to replace R410A as the standard eventually. The R32 gas is used in a few air conditioner models, such as the Toshiba Youme and Daikin Ezi series.
The 4 Steps of The Aircon Gas Top Up Process
1. Checking the Refrigerant Level
The first step is to check the refrigerant level in your air conditioner. This can be done with a special tool called a pressure gauge. If the refrigerant level is low, you will need to add more.
2. Determining the Type of Gas
The next step is to determine the type of gas your air conditioner uses. This can be checked based on the model of your air conditioner.
- If you have an R22 air conditioner, you will need to replace it with an R410A model.
- If you have an R32 air conditioner, you can simply refill it with R32 gas.
- If you have an R410A air conditioner, you can refill it with either R32 or R410A gas.
3. Refilling the Aircon Gas
The third step is to connect the pressure gauge to the low-pressure port on your air conditioner. The low-pressure port is usually located near the evaporator coil.
Once the pressure gauge is connected, you will need to turn on your air conditioner and let it run for a few minutes.
After the air conditioner has been running for a few minutes, you can check the pressure with the gauge. If the pressure is low, you will need to add more refrigerant.
4. Checking Refrigerant Level Again
The fourth and final step is to turn off your air conditioner and disconnect the pressure gauge. Once the gauge is disconnected, you can replace the cap on the low-pressure port. The entire process takes about 30 to 45 minutes.
Should you DIY to top up aircon gas?
It is not recommended to do it yourself as aircon gas top-up requires specialized equipment and knowledge. Inexperienced handling of the equipment or gas may cause serious injuries. It is best to leave it to the professionals.
A professional aircon gas top-up service has many benefits, such as:
- They have the experience and knowledge to handle the equipment and gas properly.
- They can properly assess your air conditioner to see if it needs more refrigerant.
- They can recharge your air conditioner with the proper amount of refrigerant.
- They can dispose of the used refrigerant properly.
Recharging your air conditioner with refrigerant is a simple process that can be done by a professional. If you need to recharge your air conditioner, it’s best to leave it to the professionals.
